Radiation therapy is the use of high energy x-rays (photons) to shrink tumors and the aim of radiation therapy is to kill cancer cells. X-rays, gamma rays, and charged particles are different types of radiation used to treat cancer. Radiation can be delivered by a machine outside the body (external radiation) or may come from radioactive material placed in the body near cancer cells (internal radiation therapy, also called brachytherapy). Systemic radiotherapy uses radioactive substances such example radioactive iodine, that travel in the bloodstream to kill cancer cells. About half of all cancer patients receive some type of radiation therapy at some point during treatment. The real target of the photons is the DNA in cancer cells. Photon damage to the DNA directly or indirectly, causes the cancer cell to lose it’s ability to grow and divide.
The Curative radiation therapy aims to provide the patient with a cure and to increase survival. This is mainly used when the primary cancer has not travelled from its initial position to other areas of the body and the patient’s medical condition is good enough to tolerate the treatment. The palliative radiation therapy is to aid in symptom control such as pain, prevent cancer complications and provide increased quality of life. This is mainly used when the primary cancer is deemed to be incurable. The type of radiation therapy prescribed by a radiation oncologist depends on many factors such as the type and size of cancer, the cancer’s location in the body, how close the cancer is to normal tissues that are sensitive to radiation, how far into the body the radiation needs to travel, the patient’s general health and medical history, whether the patient will have other types of cancer treatment, Other factors, such as the patient’s age and other medical conditions. Many types of Radiation therapies are used for cancer such as Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, Image-guided radiation therapy, Tomotherapy, Stereotactic radiosurgery, Stereotactic body radiation therapy, Internal radiation therapy and Systemic radiation therapy.
OMICS Group International is a unique blend of international conferences and open access publications. OMICS Group was established in the year 2007 with an aim of “Making the information on Sciences and Technology-Open Access†It publishes journals in all aspects of Science, Engineering, Management and Technology; it publishes around 400 online open access journals. OMICS Group organizes International Conferences across the globe. Each conference has people from around the globe, and knowledge is exchanged through symposiums, workshops, poster presentations, by people who are leading researchers, noble prize winners, Educational instructors, Research Scholars, and leading scientists.
