Scope and Importance:
Nucleotides are polymers or organic molecules that act as the monomers or subunits, of nucleic acids like RNA and DNA. Nucleotides are also known as the building blocks of nucleic acids. A nucleotide contains a nitrogenous base, a five carbon sugar, for example, ribose or deoxyribose, and one phosphate group at least. Nucleotides carry packs of energy inside the cell as the nucleoside triphosphates like ATP, CTP, UTP and GTP, which plays a crucial role in metabolism. Nucleotides also takes part in cell signaling like cGMP and cAMP, and are combined into essential cofactors of enzymatic reactions like coenzyme A, FAD, FMN, NAD, and NADP+. A nucleotide is contains a nitrogenous base, a five carbon sugar e.g., either ribose or 2-deoxyribose, and one or more phosphate groups. Without the phosphate group, the nitrogenous base and sugar compose a nucleoside. The phosphate groups form bonds with either the 2, 3, or 5-carbon of the sugar, with the 5-carbon site most common. When the phosphate group is bound to two of the sugar's hydroxyl groups cyclic nucleotides will be formed. Nucleotides consist of either a pyrimidine or a purine base. Nucleotides in which the sugar is ribose, they are called Ribonucleotides. Nucleotides in which the sugar is deoxyribose they are Deoxyribonucleotides. Nucleotide monomers forms polymeric macromolecules called Nucleic acids. In DNA, the purine bases are adenine and guanine and pyrimidines bases are thymine and cytosine. RNA contains uracil instead of thymine. Due to their distinctive structures, adenine always pairs with thymine by 2 hydrogen bonds, while guanine pairs with cytosine by 3 hydrogen bonds.
