Scope and Importance of Fasting:
The American Cancer Society reports there are many short-term side effects of fasting. These include headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, low blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms. People who are fasting may experience an impaired ability to conduct certain tasks, such as operate machinery or drive a vehicle. Fasting could also cause flareups of certain conditions such as gout or gallstones. Fasting could impair the body's ability to absorb certain medications or even alter drug interactions in the body. Fasting has detrimental impacts in the long term as well. Not only can fasting damage the immune system, it can also negatively affect many of the body's organs, including the liver and kidneys. Fasting could interfere with vital bodily function. Abstaining from eating could also be potentially dangerous in individuals who are already malnourished, for example, cancer patients. It's even possible for fasting to result in death when the body's stored energy is entirely depleted.
Market Analysis:
Diabetes is the 10th leading cause of death in Nevada (vs. 7th in the United States). Nevada is currently ranked 16th out of all states in diabetes prevalence. In 2010, 7.9% of Nevada’s population reported having been diagnosed with diabetes (over 160,000 people). Although Nevada has been improving its relative position in the state-by-state rankings, diabetes prevalence in Nevada has been increasing over the past 20 years. Estimates are that the total cost of diabetes in Nevada will exceeds $17.3billion by 2015, including lost work productivity and direct medical bills. About equal percentages of men and women in Nevada have clinically diagnosed diabetes, but men have a higher mortality rate from diabetes than do women
