A fibre optic sensor is a sensor that uses opticalfibre either as the sensing element ("intrinsic sensors"), or as a means of relaying signals from a remote sensor to the electronics that process the signals ("extrinsic sensors"). Fibers have many uses in remote sensing. Depending on the application, fiber may be used because of its small size, or because no electrical power is needed at the remote location, or because many sensors can be multiplexed along the length of a fiber by using light wavelength shift for each sensor, or by sensing the time delay as light passes along the fiber through each sensor. Time delay can be determined using a device such as an optical time-domain reflectometer and wavelength shift can be calculated using an instrument implementing optical frequency domain reflectometry.
Fiber optic sensors are also immune to electromagnetic interference, and do not conduct electricity so they can be used in places where there is high voltage electricity or flammable material such as jet fuel. Fiber optic sensors can be designed to withstand high temperatures as well.

Scope and Importance
Fibers with operating temperature of 200°C and above are considered as high temperature fiber. High temperature fibers are synthetic fibers that exhibit unique properties, such as high-strength bearing capacity, high thermal resistance, low density, excellent electrical insulation, and so on. These fibers are widely used in the various high temperature applications. High temperature fibers are witnessing significant growth on account of the growing demand for heat and fire resistant fibers from various end use applications. The high temperature fibers covered in this report are aramid fibers, ceramic fibers and other fibers. Ceramic fiber is the most widely used fiber. It is commonly used in industrial application. Aramid fiber is widely used in security and protection application.
Market Analysis:
The growth of the market will be driven by the increasing demand for high temperature fiber in security and protection, industrial, and automotive applications. The Asia-Pacific region is the largest market for high temperature fibers, followed by Europe. The Asia-Pacific market is estimated to be the key growth area due to the high rate of economic development being experienced in the region. Moreover, increasing awareness about health and safety of military personnel and industrial employees is also contributing significantly to the market growth. The industrial sector is a major application for the high temperature fiber market, accounting for around 49.76% of the market share, in terms of value, in 2014. The security and protection and automotive applications of high temperature fibers are expected to have a healthy growth rate between 2015 and 2020.
