Kaposi Sarcoma

Kaposi sarcoma is originally described by Moritz Kaposi, Hungarian dermatologist practicing at the University of Vienna in 1872.

Kaposi sarcoma is a cancer which causes patches on abnormal tissue to grow beneath the skin, lining membrane of mouth, nose, or in the other organs. These patches usually will be red color or in purple color and are made up of cancer cells and blood cells. These two color patches often cause no symptoms, though painful. Bleeding occurs when the cancer spread to digestive tract or lungs. Lung tumors can make breathing hard.

This condition carries a variable clinical course ranging from minimal mucocutaneous disease to extensive organ involvement. Kaposi sarcoma can be primarily categorized into 4 types:
• Epidemic of AIDS-related
• Immuno compromised
• Classic, or sporadic
• Endemic (African)
AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma, unlike other forms of the disease, tends to have an aggressive clinical course. It is the most common presentation of Kaposi sarcoma.

Prevention:
There will be no vaccines at that time to protect people against KSHV (Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus). For preventing Kaposi sarcoma depends on reducing the chance of becoming infected with KSHV and reducing the chance that people who are infected with KSHV will develop KS. Most KS cases in the USA occur in People with AIDS. They are taking measures to avoid becoming infected with HIV could prevent most cases of KS in this country. Since HIV can spread through sex, avoiding unprotected sex with people who infected with HIV could help to prevent this Kaposi Sarcoma. HIV may also spread through use of contaminated needles to infect Narcotic drugs. The safest way to avoid HIV is to quit taking those narcotic drugs in regular. If they are unable to quit on their own then get some help, though they may not be able to stop taking the drugs on a right away. In some areas there are programs to make sure that drug users can get clean needles and syringes.
