Peripheral nerve is a term used synonymously to describe the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is a network of 43 pairs of motor and sensory nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord to the entire human body. These nerves control the functions of sensation, movement and motor coordination. The PNS encompasses the nervous system external to the brain and spinal cord. In the PNS, axons are collected into bundles supported by connective tissue to form a nerve. The PNS consists of 31 pairs of spinal nerves, which arise from the spinal cord, and 12 pairs of cranial nerves, which originate from the brainstem. The peripheral nervous system includes the following nerves: Brachial plexus nerve,

Peripheral nerve damage caused by diabetes is one of the most common forms of neuropathy. This leads to numbness, pain, and loss of sensation in the extremities. According to the University of Chicago’s Center for Peripheral Neuropathy (UCCPN), nearly 60 % of diabetics have some sort of nerve damage (UCCPN, 2010). This damage is often due to high blood sugar levels, and risk for neuropathy increases for diabetics who are overweight, have high blood pressure, or are over the age of 40. More than 1.4 million Americans will experience a nerve injury this year and roughly 900,000 will require a surgical intervention. The need for nerve repair options is paramount. An estimated 20 million people in the United States have some form of peripheral neuropathy, a condition that develops as a result of damage to the peripheral nervous system — the vast communications network that transmits information between the central nervous system
The rapidly increasing incidence of peripheral nerve injuries and neurological disorders is a major growth driver for this market. Furthermore, technological advancement in nerve repair and favorable reimbursement policies will be an important driver for the nerve repair and regeneration market. The global nerve repair and regeneration market is valued at USD 5,945.69 Million in 2015. This market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.83% to reach USD 10,398.79 Million in 2020.
