Class switching
Class switching or immunoglobulin class switching is otherwise called as Class Switch Recombination (CSR) or Isotypic commutation. The biological mechanism that changes B cell’s production of antibodies from one form to another is known as isotype switching or immunoglobulin class switching. The constant region portion of the antibody heavy chain changes but the variable region of the heavy chain remains constant during this class switching process. The class switching does not affect antigen specificity as the variable region is same and the antibody retains affinity for same antigens but can interact with different effector molecules. Thus different daughter cells are allowed to produce antibodies of different isotypes or subtypes from the same activated B cell. After the activation of mature B cell via its membrane bound antibody molecule to generate the different classes of antibody class switching occurs and all with the same variable domains are generated as original antibody in immature B cell during the process of Variable, Diverse, Joining recombination, but possessing distinct constant domains in their heavy chains. The portions of antibody heavy chain locus are removed from chromosome and the gene segments surrounding the deleted portion are rejoined to retain a functional antibody gene that produces antibody of a different isotype during this class switch recombination process.
