Tumor suppressors
Tumor suppressors are also called as anti-oncogene which protects the gene of the cell from different disease like cancer. Due to the diseased conditions the functions of the cells gets reduced when it combined with other genetic changes.
The loss of these gene leads to formation of the cancer cells by oncogene activation.
Based on the function the tumor suppressors are categories in to many names like care taker genes, landscaper genes, gate keeper gene etc. Information about the tumor suppressors helps in medicinal advances and useful in the study of genetics, molecular genetics, epigenetics, molecular biology etc.
Example: p53
The product of the tumor suppresser gene p53 is a protein of fifty three kilo Daltons (hence the name). (You can notice that the human gene is multifariously selected as P53, TP53 ["tumor protein 53"], and TRP53 ["transformation-related protein 53"])
The p53 protein prevents a cell from finishing the cell cycle if
• Its DNA is broken or
• The cell has suffered alternative sorts of injury.
When
• The injury is minor, p53 halts the cell cycle — thence biological process — till the injury is repaired.
• The injury is major and can't be repaired; p53 triggers the cell to kill by cell death.
These functions build p53 a key player in protecting us against cancer; that's, it's a crucial tumor suppresser gene. Quite 1/2 all human respiratory organ, ovarian, and body part cancers harbor p53 mutations and haven't any functioning p53 macromolecule.
Mice are cured of cancer by treating them with a amide that activates production of the p53 macromolecule within the tumor cells. However, there could also be an exchange involved: excess production of the p53 macromolecule ends up in accelerated aging in mice.
