Plasma cells

The white blood cells that secrete large volumes of antibodies are plasma cells. The matured B lymphocyte that is specialized for antibody production is known as Plasma cell. Plasma cells are also called as plasma B cells, plasmocytes and effector B cells. The blood plasma and lymphatic system transports these plasma cells. These cells are rarely found in peripheral blood and comprises from 0.2% to 2.8% of the bone marrow white cell count. Normally in lymph nodes before terminal differentiation into plasma cells they leave the bone marrow as B cells. Mature plasma cells are oval or fan shaped, measuring 8-15 µm and the nucleus is eccentric and oval shaped. Nucleus to cytoplasm ratio is 2:1 to 1:1 and particularly in patients with lymphoid blood dyscrasias the nucleus may be bilobed or multilobed. The perinuclear zone is very distinct which appears white in the deeply basophilic cytoplasm. The condensed and very patchy nuclear chromatin appears as dark blocks on a reddish-purple background. Depending on the stain and the ribosomal content of the individual cell, the cytoplasm stains deep blue to gray blue. In multiple myeloma and plasma cell leukemia these plasma cells can be seen. Plasma cells have an indeterminate lifespan ranging from days to months after the process of affinity maturation in germinal centers. These plasma cells have been shown to reside for much longer period in bone marrow and are said to be long lived plasma cells. Each plasma cell can secrete high levels of antibodies, thus releasing a large amount of antibody into the circulation. After the stimulus is removed the initial burst of antibody production gradually decreases for example getting recovered from infection.
