Blood Disorders

Blood disorders can affect one or more parts of the blood and prevent blood from doing its functions. They may be acute or chronic. Many blood disorders are inherited. Other causes include other diseases, a lack of certain nutrients in your diet and side effects of medicines. Hematology is the branch of science that deals with blood disorders or study of blood in health and disease. It deals with the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and the proteins involved in bleeding and clotting (hemostasis and thrombosis). People may be affected by many different types of blood conditions and blood cancers. Common blood disorders include anemia, bleeding disorders such as hemophilia, blood clots, and blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Blood disorders can affect any of the three main components of blood: Red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the body's tissues, White blood cells, which fight infections, Platelets, which help blood to clot. The cancers of the blood include myeloma and leukemia. Eosinophilic disorders, which affect the one type of white blood cell. Blood disorders that affect red blood cells include: Anemia: People have a low number of red blood cells. Mild anemia frequently causes no symptoms. More severe anemia can cause pale skin, fatigue, and shortness of breath with exertion. Iron-deficiency anemia: Iron is necessary for the body to make red blood cells. Low iron intake and loss of blood due to menstruation are the most common causes of iron-deficiency anemia. Having an abnormally low number of these cells is known as leucopenia.Having an abnormally low number of thrombocytes is known as thrombocytopenia. Routinely hematologists perform work that includes care and treatment of patients with hematological diseases, viewing blood films and bone marrow slides under the microscope, interpreting various hematological test results and blood clotting test results in the laboratory.Hematology deals with bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, hematological malignacies such as lymphoma and leukemia, hemoglobinopathies, science of blood transfusion and the work of a blood bank, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. Treatment includes Diet advice, Oral medication - tablets or liquid medicines, Anticoagulation therapy, Intramuscular injections , Blood transfusion , Venesection also known as therepeutic phlebotomy , Bone marrow transplant , All kinds of anti-cancer chemotherapy, Radiotherapy.Hematology conferences, workshops and symposiums are an excellent platform to share and experience the latest advancement in the diagnosis, treatment and research methodologies.
Physicians who work in hematology laboratories, and most commonly manage them, are pathologists specialized in the diagnosis of hematological diseases, referred to as Hematologists and hematopathologists generally work in conjunction to formulate a diagnosis and deliver the most appropriate therapy if needed.Hematology is a distinct subspecialty of internal medicine, separate from but overlapping with the subspecialty of medical oncology.
